Discovery Methods
Discovery Overview
Webex app users utilize HELD, which reports its location to 9Line. 9Line cannot discover Webex devices on the network as they do not report any information via CDP or LLDP to the network infrastructure or report network location to CUCM.
The 9Line agent discovers IP phone and Jabber clients, as applicable, in a top-down manner based on the following methods.
- Physical phones with a wired connection. Discovery occurs using CDP or LLDP information provided by SNMP polling of managed switches.
- Physical phones and Jabber clients are discovered on wireless access points based on a CUCM AXL query. CUCM will report to 9Line the BSSID an IP phone or Jabber client is associated to.
- Physical phones' and Jabber clients' IP addresses are discovered using a CUCM SNMP query. The IP address must correlate to a network subnet and location configured in the 9Line portal.
- A user or administrator manually sets the location for a physical phone or Jabber client.
The discovery methods are ranked in their order of precedence. If a phone is discovered using multiple methods, the higher-ranking method will be used.
We recommend that customers implement discovery methods using the most granular information feasible, such as switchport.
The 9Line system allows customers to deploy a less granular method, such as IP Subnet, to begin their compliance journey and later add a more detailed method, such as switchport-based discovery. Once configured, the higher-ranking method, switchport, will override the lower-ranked method, subnet, as 9Line periodically polls switches and CUCM systems.
